- The hospital and my office will call you the day before surgery to tell you what time to arrive. If your surgery is scheduled on Monday, you will receive a call the Friday before. If you have any questions or have not been notified by 3:00pm the day before surgery, please call 859.301.BONE (2663) before 5:00pm.
- Arrive at the assigned time at the Registration desk in the main hospital lobby. If you are unable to arrive at the assigned time, please call the above numbers to notify them of your late arrival. Your surgery may need to be postponed if you are running late.
- If you have a fever, cold, nausea/ vomiting or diarrhea, within 24 hours of your surgery, please notify the Spine Division office at 859.301.BONE (2663), or contact the house supervisor, as your surgery will need to be postponed.
- If you notice any tooth infections/gum soreness or skin sores/rash near the area of the surgery, notify the Spine Division office at 859.301.BONE (2663) immediately.
- Stop all Aspirin, Ibuprofen (NSAIDs), Celebrex, Excedrin, Lovenox, Plavix and all other blood thinners at least 7 days before surgery.
- Eat a healthy dinner and drink plenty of fluids the evening before surgery.
- DO NOT eat or drink anything after midnight the night before surgery. You may brush your teeth and rinse your mouth with mouthwash the morning of surgery, but try not to swallow any water.
- Wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing that you can easily put back on when you are discharged home.
- Unless instructed to do so, DO NOT take diabetic medications the morning of surgery.
- DO NOT take any herbal supplements or weight reduction medications at least 7 days before surgery.
- DO NOT chew gum or eat hard candy the morning of surgery.
- DO NOT shave the operative area before surgery.
- DO NOT smoke or use chewing tobacco or drink alcohol for 24 hours before surgery.
- Take a shower with soap the evening before or the morning of surgery.
- If you use inhalers, please bring them with you.
- Bring a list of your current medications, including doses and times taken.
- Leave all valuables (including jewelery, credit cards and cash) at home.
- Remove all piercings.
- Bring your insurance card and identification card the morning of surgery.
- Bring slippers or slip-on, rubber sole shoes and a robe that your family can hold during surgery. You will need them the evening of surgery or the day after.
- If you have a corset, brace or cervical collar, bring it with you.
- If you use CPAP machine, bring it with you.
- DO NOT wear contact lenses the morning of surgery. If you wear hearing aids, dentures, or other prosthetic devices, bring their appropriate cases and leave them with your family members during surgery.
- Remove all make-up and fingernail polish the evening before surgery.
- If you have outside MRI/films from another facility, please bring the actual films with you on the day of surgery. If the films are not available, your surgery may need to be postponed.
- After surgery, you will go to the recovery room for about 1 hour. You will then be transferred to either the ICU or the post-op floor. Your family/friends may wait in the surgical waiting room. The surgeon will talk with them after the surgery is finished and you are in the recovery room.
